چکیده

A dynamic model of UV light photoinitiated cross linking in corneal collagen is presented to analyze the critical issues involved in the procedure. These issues include the dynamics of the UV light penetration and the safety depth margin (z*), the roles of the UV light intensity, concentration and extinction coefficient of the initiator. Analytic formulas are developed to show that z* is a decreasing function of the extinction coefficient and the concentration of the initiator, but it is a nonlinearly increasing function of the light intensity and irradiation time. Our analytic formulas are used to analyze the measured data showing the dynamic feature of the light intensity. Finally, a new protocol is suggested based on our theoretical and experimental finding.

Analytic Formulas for the Clinical Issues of a UV-Light-Activated Corneal Crosslinking Device

Objective: Modeling the critical issues of the dynamics of UV-light-initiated crosslinking of corneal collagen including the new safety criteria, crosslinking time and the efficacy. Methods: A coupled dynamic equations is numerically solved and analytic formulas are derived for three critical parameters: the safety dose (E*), the cross linking time (T*) and the efficacy defined by the increase ...

Corneal cross linking for keratoconus.

Riboflavin-induced ultraviolet light (UV) cross linking has received a significant amount of attention in recent years. It is currently approved in Europe as a treatment for keratoconus and is also being used for other corneal disorders. The goal of this paper is to review in detail seminal papers and studies that have been done to support cross linking as a safe and effective treatment for pat...

UV cross-linking of donor corneas confers resistance to keratolysis.

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to develop a modified ex vivo corneal cross-linking method that increases stromal resistance to enzymatic degradation for use as a carrier for the Boston keratoprosthesis. METHODS Ex vivo cross-linking of human corneas was performed using Barron artificial anterior chambers. The corneas were deepithelialized, pretreated with riboflavin solution (0.1% riboflav...

Evaluating the Effects of Riboflavin/UV-A and Rose-Bengal/Green Light Cross-Linking of the Rabbit Cornea by Noncontact Optical Coherence Elastography

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to use noncontact optical coherence elastography (OCE) to evaluate and compare changes in biomechanical properties that occurred in rabbit cornea in situ after corneal collagen cross-linking by either of two techniques: ultraviolet-A (UV-A)/riboflavin or rose-Bengal/green light. METHODS Low-amplitude (≤10 μm) elastic waves were induced in mature rabbit co...

Photochemical activation increases the porcine corneal stiffness and resistance to collagenase digestion.

In this study, we explore the effect of photochemical activation induced corneal cross-linking, utilizing Rose Bengal (RB) and 532 nm green light irradiation (RB-PCL), on porcine corneal biomechanical rigidity and the biochemical resistance against collagenase digestion. A protocol with a wavelength of 532 nm and illumination intensity of 0.4W/cm(2) for 250 s to deliver a dose of 100 J/cm(2) wa...
